With the constant changes in Google I find myself reading and buying more and more SEO related stuff. Software is not different. Heck, I have even created my own software because I couldn’t find anything that did what I wanted.

That is a darn good question. The bottom line is that links still work…. the problem is now one knows with any certainty which ones work and why.
